The Advanced Weather Radar and In-Flight Icing product development team winter weather polarimetric radar demonstration

Kimberly L. Elmore, CIMMS/Univ. of Oklahoma, Norman, OK; and M. K. Politovich

During the 2006-2007 cold season, the Advanced Weather Radar Techniques product development team, in conjunction with the In-Flight Icing pdroduct development team will demonstrate polarimetric radar capabilities for aviation applications. Specifically, the prototype WSR-88DP radar, KOUN, operated at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, OK, will be used to demonstrate polarimetric capability for aviation-oriented cold-weather algorithms and techniques. The demonstrated capabilities will include at least hydrometeor classification, liquid/frozen hydrometeor discrimination, freezing level detection, visibility estimation, and quatitaitive precipitation estimation for winter precipitation. Research aircraft involvment is likely.

This paper will provide some of the specifics of the field project plan and goals for the demonstration.
