Measuring the effects of the 1997 El Nino/1998 La Nina events on Antarctic cyclones through the analysis of satellite imagery

Rebecca Wolf, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD

The purpose of this investigation is to discern any effects of the 1997 El Nino and the 1998 La Nino events. This study utilizes satellite imagery to gain a significant understanding of the frequency of Antarctic cyclones. The storms are tracked over a three-year period (1997-1999), during the months of June, July, August and September. Based on the occurrence of the storms as well as an understanding of the effects of El Nino and La Nina events, it is the intent of this study to show that the global weather events such as El Nino and La Nina did have an effect on the frequency of cyclonic storm formation in the vicinity of the Antarctic continent.
