Aviation Weather – Educating for the Glass Cockpit

Scott R. Winter, Minnesota State Univ., Mankato, MN; and C. S. Keen

Weather still remains the cause of numerous aviation accidents despite the technological advances in modern-day glass cockpits. It may be that the education and training of pilots is not keeping pace. Aviation weather courses appear mostly to be delivered by traditional book, overhead diagrams, and Internet data sources. By using some inspiring graphics and visualization techniques, the learning experiences of student-pilots can be greatly enhanced and retained as educational experiences into future aviation careers. This paper addresses several areas where basic weather concepts are visualized for the benefit of improving pilot understanding and safety.
