Large Water Droplets at Cloud Top of Clouds Producing Freezing Drizzle

Jennifer Simard, NCAR, Boulder, CO; and S. Landolt, M. Politovich, and B. Bernstein

A preliminary analysis of single layer clouds producing freezing drizzle at the surface to find supercooled large water droplets (SLD; D>50um) at cloud top is presented. Single-layer, supercooled drizzle producing clouds were identified using surface observations of freezing drizzle from ASOS stations and collocated soundings. Cloud products developed by NASA-Langley, including a drop size product will be used to compare the estimated drop size at cloud top for drizzling and non-precipitating clouds. This information (if verified) could be incorporated into icing potential products to help better identify SLD in clouds.
