The Record-Setting 2004 Florida Hurricane Season

Jamie L. Zajac, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, FL

The 2004 Florida Hurricane Season was the most destructive season in history, even exceeding the 1886 Texas Hurricane Season in total wind speeds of hurricanes making landfall and monetary destruction. The season set obscure records such as the first known occurrence of two hurricanes making landfall on the same location in less than a month, the strongest hurricane to make landfall in over a decade, and for the number of hurricanes to strike one state within one month. The tropical storm activity of 2004 was exceptional for all who were directly and indirectly involved in its prediction, experience, and recovery.
