P1.0

Continuing the impact of a summer research program through a REUnion

Somer A. Erickson, University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK; and D. S. Zaras

During this past summer, the first ever REUnion of past National Weather Center Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NWC REU) participants took place in the heart of the NWC in Norman, Oklahoma. The purpose of the REUnion was to give former REUers a chance to make connections in order to further their knowledge, careers and resources. The event included a fully loaded weekend of tours, seminars, social gatherings, as well as networking, and culminated with a formal awards banquet for those involved in REU over the years. Attendees were asked to complete questionnaires in order for us to gain insight into the performance of coordination, type, number and location of events, as well as overall reaction including personal benefits. This presentation will review the findings regarding both the positive aspects and those areas that may need improvement. We hope that other summer internship programs may benefit from these ideas and the information we have found valuable to our REU alumni.
