Symposium on the Public/Private Sector Partnership

3.5

Maximizing the Benefits of the American Weather Enterprise

Barry Lee Myers, AccuWeather Inc, State College, PA

Since the government weather service was created by an act of Congress in 1890, there have been a variety of policies in effect and proposed that would govern the weather service's mission and role.

Since it rescinded its “Public-Private Partnership Policy”, the National Weather Service has issued a new policy and then acted to modify this policy within its first year. There have also been a number of Congressional Reports and bills introduced regarding National Weather Service duties.

A number of issues have been raised regarding National Weather Service funding, especially with regard to hurricane preparedness and to the most beneficial use of existing funds.

This presentation will discuss these important topics, and explore how the American Weather Enterprise can maximize the benefits to the public of a strong and vigorous public sector, private sector and academic sector.
