The UNF Advanced Weather Information Systems Laboratory: A novel approach to information systems for Engineering Education
A402 (Georgia World Congress Center)
Patrick T. Welsh, Univ. of North Florida, Jacksonville, FL; and J. D. Lambert

The University of North Florida has developed the Advanced Weather Information Systems (AWIS) Laboratory as part of the College of Computing, Engineering and Construction to conduct inter-disciplinary research and education. The laboratory is focused on environmental information systems from sensor development, wireless networking to analysis and modeling.

The laboratory allows students to develop real world skills with real world information systems. Several projects will be highlighted that have allowed the laboratory to incorporate both student development and research at the University of North Florida. Among them are Geographic Information Systems applications, the Florida Mesonet, the Florida Road Weather Information System (RWIS) and the FHWA iFlorida Project.

Current plans include continuing with road weather (RWIS) research, and new efforts in realtime data integration, analysis and high-resolution, explicit convection WRF modeling as the next group of AWIS Lab projects.
