The MITRE Corporation's Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are developing a set of enhancements to the User Request Evaluation Tool (URET). These enhancements include detection, analysis and resolution capabilities for severe weather problems and are designed to further the support provided for strategic Air Traffic Control. This paper discusses the concept of use of the proposed capabilities, weather information requirements necessary to support the concept, and a description of the problem resolution algorithms being developed for severe weather situations.
