TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW AND VALIDATED PERFORMANCE OF ALPS™ TECHNOLOGY WITHIN THE UNITED STATES PRECISION LIGHTNING NETWORK

This presentation will address the technology behind the Advanced Lightning Positioning System (ALPS) and its role within the new and more advanced United States Precision Lightning Network (USPLN). Emphasis will also be given to a number of related topics including the processing of both cloud-to-ground stroke and cloud flash data in real-time as well as an overview of the extensive use of this technology within the commercial meteorological community within the United States as well as a growing number of international weather services.

In support of the technical capabilities professed during this presentation, documented performance of the technology will be presented through use of individual cloud-to-ground stroke and cloud flash reports in both isolation and as total lightning, correlated events recorded at instrumented sites, data overlaid with radar and GOES imagery, and the path of hurricanes such as Dennis and Emily as they moved through the Caribbean Sea on their track into the Gulf of Mexico and their subsequent landfall.
