Relationship of Narrow Bipolar Events to Microwave Ice-Scattering Convective-Storm Signatures

This presentation summarizes statistics on the behavior of Narrow Bipolar Event (NBE) lightning strokes with respect to the well-known microwave Ice-Scattering Signature of deep convective cells. The lightning data are from the Los Alamos Sferic Array (LASA) in Florida. The microwave data are from the TMI instrument aboard the TRMM satellite. I will go beyond previous specific examples of NBE/ice coincidences, to develop overall statistics of the coincidence of NBE strokes with convective cells identified by their extremely depressed 85-GHz polarization-corrected temperature. This information will help to determine the ability of NBEs to serve as remote-sensing proxies for severe convection.
