Surface pressure data analysis in complex terrain

Michael E. Splitt, NOAA/Cooperative Institute for Regional Prediction and Univ. of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT; and T. Blazek

A method for analysis of surface pressure data in complex terrain onto a constant height surface is demonstrated. Multivariate linear regression is used to create a background pressure field, which is then modified to nudge toward the observations using standard successive correction methods. Surface pressure data are obtained from MesoWest - Cooperative Mesonets in the Western United States. The resultant pressure analyses are compared to hand anlyses, RUC-II analyses, and model forecast fields.
