Validation of quantitative precipitation forecasts during IPEX
John D. Horel, NOAA/Cooperative Institute for Regional Prediction and Univ. of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT; and L. Cheng and M. E. Splitt
Precipitation estimates from automated gages in northwestern Utah were collected during the Intermountain Precipitation Experiment (IPEX) during February 2000. Since several types of automated gages are deployed in the region, considerable effort is required to evaluate the accuracy of the precipitation estimates. After considerable quality control, the precipitation estimates have been related to the quantitative precipitation forecasts made by the Eta and Aviation models. Model precipitation forecast skill is lower in the intermountian region than any other region of the country. Techniques to quantify model skill in regions of complex terrain are assessed.
