A single column regional version of the ARCSyM (Arctic Regional Climate System) model is used to evaluate boundary layer parameterizations against observations obtained in the Arctic during the SHEBA field campaign. Three different boundary layer parameterizations are evaluated: a local first-order closure, a nonlocal first-order closure with countergradient mixing and entrainment parameterizations, and a second-order closure. The simulations are compared against one another and against the observations. The relative benefits of these schemes for application to the Arctic is evaluated.
