Modelling the Road Climatology of the West Midlands, UK

John E. Thornes, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom; and A. Bradley and L. Chapman

As part of the NERC URGENT research program in the United Kingdom we have developed a new Road Surface Temperature prediction model. The model predicts the road surface temperature for each 20m stretch of road for up to 24 hours ahead. We have developed a database that includes a sky-view factor image, obtained using a digital video camera, for each 20m stretch of road. The sun track is plotted each day to calculate shadow angles and radiation receipt. Results will be compared with thermal mapping surveys.
