Modelling dynamics of urban meteorology
Stephen E Belcher, University of Reading, Reading, Berks., United Kingdom
An urban canopy model has been developed for the mean winds and turbulence in urban areas. The model represents the buildings as a region of resistance to the air flow. The resistance is allowed to vary with fetch or depth, representing variable building density. Results from the model agree reasonably well with wind tunnel data, both within and above the canopy. The model also indicates when and where a roughness length can be used as a bulk parameterisation of the urban area.
