Two contrasting case studies of entrainment zone structure in cloud capped marine atmospheric boundary layers

Ian M. Brooks, University of Leeds, Leeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Two contrasting case studies of cloud-top and entrainment zone structure determined from aircraft borne lidar measurements are presented. The behaviour of the cloud top and entrainment zone structures differ markedly – one displaying a strong inverse dependence on the Richardson number across the inversion layer, while the other displays no variability with Ri. The differences between the two cases are explained in terms of the physical structure of the layer immediately above cloud top.
