A new method for 3D cloud-resolving simulations of large- scale atmospheric circulation

Zhiming Kuang, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA

We present a computationally efficient new method for simulating the interactions between large-scale atmospheric circulations and deep convection in a 3D cloud-resolving model. The key idea is to reduce the scale difference between the large-scale and convective circulations. This method will be interpreted in the context of both Diabatic Acceleration and REscaling (DARE) and Reduced Acceleration in the VErtical (RAVE). Initial results from near-global scale equatorial beta-plane simulations will be presented.
