The Harten-Lax-van Leer-Contact (HLLC) approximate Riemann solver is implemented in a Godunov-type scheme for solving the Euler equations governing atmospheric flows. The Godunov-type schemes are conservative and exhibit little numerical dispersion. This paper describes in detail the implementation of the scheme on unstructured adaptive grids. The important role Godunov-type methods can play in accurately resolving atmospheric phenomena characterized by steep gradients is also demonstrated.
