Progress towards development of methods for evaluation of spatial fire potential indicators

Progress on development of methods for evaluation of spatial indicators of fire potential is described. Previous methods such as logistic modeling of fire events, correlative methods, and chi-square analyses have not fully accounted for the inherent spatial correlation of fire potential indicators. Using relative greenness (RG) values derived from NDVI satellite data and the associated fire history for the state of Nevada between 1989 and 2000, spatially explicit methods of assessing RG as a fire potential indicator were considered. Such methods include autologistic modeling techniques for predicting fire occurrence based on RG and Monte Carlo randomization techniques. A detailed description of findings is illustrated for 1996. .
