How Enhancements in GIS Technology Can Address Challenges to Wildland Fire Management

Jeff Baranyi, Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc., Broofield, CO; and F. Dahl and J. Young

Enhancements in GIS technology will yield greater functionality for the fire community to make better decisions for wildland fire planning and response. These advances will provide insight into how to best solve old problems with novel GIS technology. The concept of a GeoDatabase, as used by the new Incident Command System Fire Mapping Tools, will be explored. The GeoDatabase will help address a “standards” based protocol for managing fire data. Ideas on how to integrate data from many locations into a single enterprise repository will be presented. Advances in three-dimensional visualization will also be discussed. The new ArcGIS geoprocessing framework will be introduced and we will talk about how you can perform geographic analysis using tools such as model builder, scripts, the command line and ArcObjects.
