Fuel reduction projects in Southwest ponderosa pine forests
Martha E. Schumann, Forest Trust, Santa Fe, NM
The Southwest Community Forestry Research Center undertook a project to describe fuel reduction treatments implemented in ponderosa pine forests in New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Examples of treatments in the wildland and the wildland-urban interface are drawn from public and private land. Photographs and data were collected in treated and untreated sections of each site. Conditions after treatment were compared with the stated project objective in the prescription. This project contributes to the development of fuel reduction prescriptions in Southwest ponderosa pine by presenting the range of treatments currently being implemented.
