J2.7 Consistency of cloud ice properties estimated from MODIS, AVHRR and SEVIRI

A new set of ice scattering models has been developed that include particles such as droxtals, plates, columns, 3-d bullet rosettes and aggregates and incorporate in situ observations of cloud microphysical properties. This new set of models has been adopted the NASA's MODIS Collection 5 cloud products and in NOAA's Clouds from AVHRR Extended (CLAVR-x) processing system. In addition, these models have been implemented into a new SEVIRI processing system at Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). We will compare the AVHRR, MODIS and SEVIRI ice cloud properties and demonstrate their consistency. In addition, the reflectance and emissivity relationships predicted by the new scattering models will be compared to those observed to test the validity of the ice scattering models. Lastly, implications for physically consistent ice cloud climatologies from AVHRR and MODIS will be explored.
