Precipitation Analyses in Support of GAPP Modeling Initiatives

Evgeney Yarosh, NOAA/NWS/NCEP/CPC, Camp Springs, MD; and W. Shi and W. Higgins

The purpose of this paper is to report on our progress in developing high resolution, gauge-only, daily precipitation analyses (both real-time and historical) in support of several ongoing GAPP projects, including the North American Land Data Assimilation System, the Regional Reanalysis project, and the GAPP Soil Moisture Reanalysis Project. Specific activities we will discuss include (1) tests of several available analysis techniques; (2) a historical daily precipitation reanalysis for the period 1948-present; (3) implementation of a real time daily precipitation analysis system on a high resolution grid for the U.S. and Mexico for the North America Land Data Assimilation (N–LDAS) Project; and (4) incorporation of new datasets (SNOTEL and HADS) into CPC's Unified Raingauge dataset.
