Evaluation of Surface Bulk Turbulent Flux Models using SHEBA Data

Afshan Alam, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO; and J. Curry

The eddy correlation sensible and latent heat fluxes measured by the Atmospheric Surface Flux Group tower during SHEBA are used to evaluate several bulk flux algorithms under examination by the SEAFLUX project. Surface-layer wind, temperature and humidity measurements and surface temperature and humidity during the SHEBA year are used as inputs to compute sensible and latent heat fluxes by various algorithms. These turbulent fluxes are compared with measured fluxes at SHEBA in order to identify problems with existing bulk algorithms when applied over sea ice.
