2001 COAMPSTM tropical cyclone verification in the Northwest Pacific Ocean
Jeffrey A. Lerner, FNMOC, Monterey, CA; and B. J. Strahl
There were 33 significant tropical cyclones that developed in the Western North Pacific basin in 2001. This study examines statistics of the differences between the Navy's Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPSTM) and best track estimates published by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). Of particular interest are the effects of removing the "best and worst" storms from the annual sample. COAMPSTM performance relative to other global and mesoscale models will also be presented.
