COPS is a German initiative aiming to advance the quality of forecasts of orographically-induced convective precipitation by 4D-observations and modelling of its life cycle.

COPS will take place in summer 2007 in south-western Germany and eastern France. The selected area covers about 250 km x 200 km. It includes different low-mountain ranges: the Vosges, the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura. The area is particular prone to high-convective precipitation in summer (50% of the days), including severe thunderstorms.

The paper will focus on the French contribution to COPS. Numerical simulations of past events are analyzed to illustrate model deficiencies and questions that will be addressed with the COPS envisaged experimental set-up.
