The WSR-88D hail detection algorithm: A performance update

Arthur Witt, NOAA/NSSL, Norman, OK

The current WSR-88D hail detection algorithm was installed during the autumn of 1996. Prior to its implementation, the algorithm underwent a limited amount of developmental testing to demonstrate that it performed better than the original WSR-88D hail algorithm. Over the past year, a substantial amount of additional testing has been completed on the algorithm, with a special emphasis on minimizing the impact of ground-truth verification deficiencies. Whereas the initial developmental testing of the WSR-88D hail detection algorithm focused primarily on data from Florida and the southern plains, the most recent test results are based on a much wider distribution of radar data, covering all regions of the U.S. Since the WSR-88D hail detection algorithm is one of the primary sources of radar-based severe-weather guidance available to operational forecasters, it is important that they be aware of its current level of performance. This paper will present the most comprehensive, nationwide performance evaluation done to date for the WSR-88D hail detection algorithm.
