A new tool for atmospheric research

Texas A&M University, in collaboration with Texas Tech University, the University of Oklahoma, and the National Severe Storms Laboratory, have developed and built two mobile C-band Doppler radars. The systems, called SMART-R for Shared Mobile Atmospheric Research and Teaching Radars, are truck mounted Doppler radars similar in many ways to the successful Doppler on Wheels. However, the new systems are C-band, rather than X-band systems, providing greater opportunity for storm-scale and mesoscale research in heavy precipitation and better Nyquist characteristics for the same pulse repetition frequency.
More details on the technical specification of the systems and their potential for severe storms research will be discussed at the conference.
