14.6 Multiple Bounded Weak Echo Regions in the 16 July 1996 Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Hailstorm Supercell

Basic supercell storm structure has been well established over the past two decades. Amoung the most notable of these internal supercell structures is the Bounded Weak Echo Region (BWER). Environment Canada's Radar Decision Support System (RDSS) dissects three-dimensional weather radar reflectivity data to identify critical storm features, including BWERs. The 16 July 1996 Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada hailstorm, which caused over $100 million dollars in damage (Canadian dollars), tracked well within RDSS range. During one phase of this storm's evolution, 5-minute volume data revealed the existence of 2 BWERs simultaneously within the storm complex. This paper will examine this storm's BWER evolution, its relevance to the areal distribution of the reported storm damage, and its implication to the supercell model structure.
