Lightning Analysis And Forecasting

Jean Souviron, AES, Montreal, PQ, Canada; and D. Jacob, V. Turcotte, R. Frenette, and M. Nadeau

The presentation will briefly describe the Canadian Lightning Detection System (CLDS), its coverage and all the data received from it to get an idea of the task at hand. An overview of the lightning display which incorporates these algorithms will be presented. This will be followed by a description of the algorithm used for the lightning analysis to group the strokes together either as thunderstorm cells, fronts or MCC with a few examples of the results. The forecasting algorithm will then be explained in details with some examples. Finally a few of the improvements that can be incorporated.
