Instability and forcing in 4 cases of convective snow from the 1999–2000 winter season
Christopher E. Halcomb, Univ. of Missouri, Columbia, MO; and P. S. Market
4 case studies of convective snow will be presented. The events occurred on 05 December 1999 in Wichita, Kansas, 09 December 1999 in Lubbock, Texas, 11 March 2000 in St. Louis, Missouri, and 19 April 2000 in Rapid City, South Dakota. The GEMPAK and PCGRIDDS meteorological software programs were used to produce both objectively analyzed and Rapid Update Cycle cross section and plan view analyses of potential temperature, equivalent potential temperature, equivalent potential vorticity, Q-vectors, frontogenesis, omega, moisture transport vectors, tropopause heights, as well as surface and mandatory levels. In each case, the type of instability present was diagnosed, as well as any major forcing mechanisms present.
