The NCEP's mesoscale 4DVAR data assimilation system is used in experiments to assess the impact of initial conditions on the forecast of severe weather events. A fine resolution eta model and its adjoint are employed in the experiments. The forecast model is used as a weak constraint. The impacts of model error and precipitation observations are the main focus of the study.

The preliminary results indicate a great potential of the 4DVAR method in mesoscale applications.
