Current Status of the ARPS Modeling System

Kelvin K. Droegemeier, Univ. of Oklahoma, Norman, OK

I will overview the current status and future plans of the CAPS Advanced Regional Prediction System, including its operational use in Korea, its commercialization at Weather Decision Technologies, Inc., and its role in the WRF project. Emphasis will be given to new efforts in single-Doppler velocity retrieval, the initialization of land-surface properties using satellite and in-situ, and ensemble forecasts at the local scales. Further, I will describe how real time WSR-88D Level II data, obtained via Project CRAFT, is being used to study the predictability and climatology of small-scale weather phenomena, and end with a brief discussion about the challenges of conducting research funded by private companies while maintaining a public-domain computer forecast system.
