Discoveries and Breakthroughs Inside Science (DBIS) Helping you be the Station Scientist
Emilie Lorditch, American Institute of Physics, College Park, MD
As a primary source of news, more people rely on local TV news than any other medium. Broadcast meteorologists have a unique opportunity to be the “station scientist” on their local news station. The American Meteorological Society has partnered with the American Institute of Physics in their production of Discoveries and Breakthroughs Inside Science (DBIS). DBIS are 90-second science news segments that are aired during the local news broadcast in over 115 television markets throughout the country. Approximately 4 of these segments each month focus on meteorology research.
Meet members of the DBIS production team including the director and the science editor. Hear why the AMS got involved and how they work with the program. Learn from broadcast meteorologists how they use DBIS during their local news broadcast to be the “station scientist.” Find out how you can become involved with DBIS and if your station is already receiving the DBIS program.
Speakers: Alicia Torres, Director of Media and Government Relations (AIP) Emilie Lorditch, Senior Science Editor (AIP) Ron McPherson, Former Executive Director of the AMS and AMS DBIS Board Member Jon Zeitler, member of AMS DBIS Board Member Broadcast Meteorologist
