New radar and severe weather predictive tools

Television meteorologists and their viewers understand the visual communication power and forecasting utility of radar. But traditional radar has been only a record of what has happened and is happening. Now new radar analysis technology has begun to use radar to scientifically predict what will happen.

New radar forecast products utilize advanced artificial intelligence techniques and up-to-the-minute, high-resolution Level II NEXRAD data to predict radar and severe weather. Predictive Radar™ analyzes past radar data to present a four-hour forecast using the familiar graphical communications format of traditional radar, while StormMaster™ provides forecasts of the movement and evolution of tornadoes, the location and size of damaging hail, and the accumulation of precipitation from severe thunderstorm cells.

These products can be a valuable tool in predicting and diagnosing severe weather. Developed in collaboration with Weather Decision Technologies (WDT), and incorporating the latest research from MIT/Lincoln Laboratory, McGill University and NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), both products are now available for use by television meteorologists on AccuWeather's professional internet site and are integrated with the Galileo Weather System for on-air display.

Information on these hazardous weather tools to be presented includes their development, verification and samples from past weather situations.
