Examination and verification of temperature-precipitation relationships in the Canadian operational numerical weather prediction models

Temperature-precipitation (T-P) relationship is important to weather analysis as well as climate prediction. In this study, the relationship represented by the Global Environmental Multiscale Model (GEM) and the High Resolution Model Application Project (HIMAP) model is examined. This relationship is verified using the observations obtained from the Alliance Icing Research Study II (AIRSII) field campaign. To understand the differences between model T-P and observed T-P relationship, we have coupled an atmospheric water budget equation with a surface energy equation, and derive a new governing equation for precipitation. The physical processes contributing to the T-P relationship are investigated, and the possible sources of the model predicted errors in the T-P relationship are analyzed. The detail results will be presented in the conference. .
