The Impacts of Land Cover Change/Land Use on Regional Hydrometeorology

Roni Avissar, Rutgers Univ., New Brunswick, NJ; and C. P. Weaver and S. Baidya Roy

The impact of land cover change / land use on turbulence and mesoscale heat fluxes in the atmospheric boundary layer is discussed based on observations collected as part of GCIP and the LBA Experiment, as well as on a set of numerical simulations produced with a regional-scale atmospheric model. Based on this analysis, it appears that land cover change / land use does significantly affect the atmospheric boundary layer, including clouds. The magnitude of this impact is dependent upon the large-scale atmospheric conditions, mostly wind intensity and stability.
