Application of the SARMAP air quality model (SAQM) to the modelling of air pollution in Hong Kong for the PATH study.

The PATH (Pollutants in the Atmosphere and their Transport over Hong Kong) project was undertaken to develop a state-of-the-art, multi-species, multi-scale modelling system for the simulation of air quality in Hong Kong. Significant components of the project included the development of emissions inventories for Hong Kong and southern-China, the selection of 11 case-study periods for the simulation of photochemical smog and PM10, the modelling of meteorological and air quality fields over spatial scales of 500 m to 2000 km, and the completion of a detailed model evaluation study. In this paper, we report on aspects of the air quality modelling undertaken using the SAQM. In particular, we will discuss the development of an annual average PM10 concentration field, and will summarize the outcomes of a model evaluation study.
