A high resolution fire danger rating system for Hawaii
Francis M. Fujioka, USDA Forest Service, Riverside, CA; and D. R. Weise and R. E. Burgan
The Makua Military Reservation (MMR) is an Army facility on the northwest shore of Oahu, Hawaii, which is used for weapons training. The area occupies a dissected valley, where the east end rises sharply to the ridgeline of the Waianae Range, and the west end opens to the Pacific Ocean. Wildland fires that occur in the valley are subject to mesoscale weather conditions that can change abruptly in the span of a kilometer or less. This paper describes a study designed to establish a fire danger rating system of corresponding resolution, which will be used to monitor fire risk affecting training activities at MMR.
