Symposium on Lidar Atmospheric Monitoring

1.1

Toward a Remote Sensing-Based Climate Observing System: Fallacies, Fantasies and Facts

Graeme Stephens, Colorado State Univeristy, Fort Collins, CO

.Characteristics of atmospheric remote sensing observing systems will discused in terms of climate observing needs. The characteristics considered include observing system accuracy, observing system stability, measurement relevance and the representativeness of the observing system. These traits will be illustrated using examples of existing observing systems with some emphasis on the current lidar capabilites in this context
