Reusable Applications Software Components for the WSR-88D

Michael J. Istok, NOAA/NWS, Silver Spring, MD

.An exciting new era of radar applications development is emerging. Limited deployment of the WSR-88D Open Systems Radar Product Generator (ORPG) will occur this year and CODE promises to make applications development easier and more efficient than ever. Many applications employ very similar processing steps however software programs are often written from scratch because of uncertainties in: knowledge of what already exists, how well pre-existing software works and is documented, and peculiarities related to its original development environment. CODE can build on the technology investment of the past several years by generalizing data analysis techniques so that software components developed for a specific purpose become readily available for use in new ways. An advantage of this is a reduction in development effort by using rather than reinventing the wheels of technology. This paper will review recent work to develop new WSR-88D products via reuse of existing algorithm and product software components, the effort and payback to modify software for general use, and will provide some plans and ideasfor future generalized applications components
