GOES-8 Visible cloud frequency composites of the convectively active Sea Breeze under stratified synoptic flow over the Florida Panhandle

Bernadette H. Connell, CIRA/Colorado State Univ., Fort Collins, CO; and K. J. Gould

GOES-8 visible cloud frequency composites have been created from imagery collected during June, July, and August for the years 1996-1998 over the Florida Panhandle. What makes these cloud frequency composites unique are their stratification into 9 regimes that reflect the strength and development of the sea breeze and the resulting effect on convective development. The 9 regimes are designated by mean boundary layer wind speed and direction over the region of interest. Methods and select results are presented as well as comments on the relevancy to forecasting at the Tallahassee NWS Forecast Office.
