Surface climate equilibrium over land

Alan K. Betts, Atmospheric Research, Pittsford, VT

A simple “equilibrium” mixed layer model is used to explore the coupling over land on a daily time-scale between the surface temperature and humidity and the surface sensible and latent heat fluxes, and the atmosphere above the mixed layer, as a function of soil wetness, modeled as a surface vegetative resistance. Observations from FIFE, and model data from the ECMWF reanalysis over the central US are used for illustration.
