Using filtering theory to predict lightning strikes

Scott J. Brunza, Sonalysts, Inc., Waterford, CT; and C. R. Coleman and J. M. Jakacky

Recent appliction of a filtering theory to lightning strike areas has led to the ability to predict the areas lightning strikes are most likely to occur in the near future. Lightning prediction is important to power utilitiy and airline operations.

A Monte Carlo approach is taken to analyze recent motion of lightning strikes. Estimates of the highly probable areas are then reported. The intensity of the activity is not predicted.
