Regional climate variability & management of long-term weather risk

Regional climate variability on various time scales can have a non-trivial impact on the risk associated with extreme weather events. Some examples include the impact of ENSO and other low-frequency variability on geographic and temporal variations of tropical cyclones, regional floods, winter storms and severe weather. This paper reviews the nature and magnitude of the risk fluctuations and identifies research objectives that may enhance the understanding and effective management of the variability in weather risk.
