The Operational Production Process of the Horace System

Horace is a workstation based system used for the visualisation, product creation and dissemination of all types of meteorological data.  It is currently in operational use at the UKMO's National Meteorological Centre in Bracknell, the Royal Air Force Strike Command, the Royal Navy Fleet Weather and Oceanographic Centre, USAFE Sembach, and the Thailand Meteorological Department.

The production process on Horace is by necessity flexible enough to create the diverse set of products required by our customers. It enables forecasters to add value to raw NWP products by means of such applications as On-Screen Field Modification, a meteorologically consistent way for editing NWP grid point data fields, and On-Screen Analysis, which analyses observational data. The Graphical Visualiser, the focal point of the production process, allows forecasters to create any type of graphical product based on the data displayed on the screen, be it observational data, NWP fields, imagery, or forecaster-added features such as fronts, for any area in the world. The resulting products can be saved in a variety of formats and disseminated to customers.

The poster presentation and accompanying paper will demonstrate features of this production process with an emphasis on its role in the operational environment but also with reference to planned future enhancements.
