Integration of weather radar and lightning detection system for severe weather monitoring at SIMEPAR

SIMEPAR operates the first S-Band, Doppler, Dual polarization meteorological radar for weather surveillance and precipitation monitoring in the south of Brazil. In conjunction with a lightning detection and location system and also a network of automatic surface meteorological stations, the available weather radar information allows for a better performance on severe weather surveillance and short-term precipitation forecast. With the integration of the radar system and the lightning detection system major emphasis is placed on understanding the mechanisms inducing high concentration of lightning strokes on the flanks of some of Parana's mountain ranges and the effect on mankind. Lightning is by far the leading cause of power system disturbances in Parana. Therefore, better understading of lightning phenomena is fundamental to mitigate the impact of lightning on transmission and distribution systems. The connection between lightning events and power systems led the Parana State Power Company to establish this integrated system. Orographic effects on observed lightning exposure were observed and correlated to other meteorological informations from radar and weather stations. The results of the first year of operation of this system will be presented here, demonstrating the application of an integrated system for weather monitoring, with emphasis on severe storm surveillance in the tropics.
