The application of Monin-Obukhov Similarity (MOS) to the atmospheric surface layer becomes problematic in extreme diabatic regimes. MOS fails when momentum flux approaches zero. Quantities such as the gross momentum flux and intermittency ratio can be obtained from covariance quadrant analysis of sonic anemometer /thermometer data. Gross momentum flux is strongly correlated with vertical velocity variance. Intermittency ratio serves as a simple stability indicator. Both quantities can be used to extend the utility of MOS during extreme diabatic conditions.
