Interactive Information Processing Systems vary widely in capabilities, complexity, and price. Factors which affect the characteristics of the system include the number and types of data sources, data source rates, computer resources, geographic coverage for both data and presentation, number and sophistication of users, and communications bandwidth between the IIPS and users. Far too often the capabilities are not determined by specific user class or application, rather than more flexible systems that can meet the needs of multiple user classes and applications.
This paper presents a rational for evaluating the requirements and appropriately scaling the IIPS and tailoring the user interfaces, with specific examples using Sonalysts' wXstation® installations.
